Connect Mastodon

Mastodon is thousands of independent servers, so you tell NioConnect which one yours is and then approve on that server; no password or token is involved.

  1. Find your server: it is the part of your handle after the second @. For @someone@fosstodon.org it is fosstodon.org.
  2. In NioConnect, open Channels, choose Add a channel, then Mastodon.
  3. Enter the address in Mastodon server. The domain on its own, or with https, both work.
  4. Press connect. Your own server opens its consent screen; approve there and you land back with a working channel.

Check the field, do not skip it

The field offers a few common servers as suggestions and defaults to mastodon.social if you leave it blank. If your account is on a different server, a blank field connects the wrong one, so read it before you press connect.

Each server is a separate connection. If you have accounts on two servers, connect twice. Any Mastodon-compatible server works, including forks such as Hometown and Glitch.

If it did not work

The form tells you what it did not like.

Mastodon address messages
What you seeWhat to do
That instance is not a valid URLEnter the bare domain only, such as fosstodon.org, not a post address
An instance must be reached over httpsDrop the http:// prefix and let NioConnect add https
An instance must be reachable on the standard https portRemove the port; unusual ports are refused on purpose
An instance URL must not contain credentialsEnter the domain without a user and password in front

If the consent screen never appears, the address does not point at a Mastodon-compatible server; open it in a browser to confirm. To cut access yourself, open Settings, Account, then Authorized apps on your server and remove NioConnect; the channel then asks to be reconnected. The Mastodon guide repeats the flow with a result check.
