AI clients and API keys

Connect an AI client

Developers shows a ready-made block for each supported AI client; paste it in and the client can work with your workspace over MCP.

  1. Open Settings, then Developers, and find Connect an AI client.
  2. In AI client, choose Claude Code, Cursor, Claude Desktop, claude.ai or ChatGPT.
  3. Choose Copy config or Copy address, and paste it where the client says.
  4. For Claude Desktop, claude.ai and ChatGPT, the client then sends you back to NioConnect to Allow it.

Two ways in

Claude Code and Cursor take a config block with an API key in it. Claude Desktop, claude.ai and ChatGPT take only an address, and connect by asking you to allow them, so they never hold a key. Create the key first with Create and revoke an API key; the new key dialog also offers the block with the key already filled in.

For Claude Code the block is one command, where the address is the one the page shows and the key is yours:

Claude Code (placeholders shown)
claude mcp add --transport http nioconnect <address shown on the page> --header "Authorization: Bearer <your key>"

For Cursor, save the block as .cursor/mcp.json inside your project, or as ~/.cursor/mcp.json to use it everywhere. For Claude Desktop or claude.ai, add a custom connector from its settings and paste the address as the connector URL.

The Allow screen

The screen asks "Connect" the client "to" your workspace and says it will act as you, with your own permissions and no more. It lists what it will be able to do in plain sentences, and warns that any app can register any name, so allow only if you started it and recognise the address. Choose Allow or Deny. Allowed clients appear under Connected AI clients, with who allowed them and when they last used it.

ChatGPT is not proven

The page itself says: "Nobody has connected ChatGPT to NioConnect from end to end, so this one is not proven." Treat it as untested until you have seen it work.

If it did not work

If the Allow page says "This request has already been answered, or it waited too long", start again from the app. If it says you do not have permission, ask an Admin. If a client stops working, Disconnect it under Connected AI clients: "It stops working immediately, and it will have to ask you again." For a key, check it was not revoked. More detail is in Connect your AI client over MCP, and the AI page has setup notes for each client.
